Work plate

A print straight on the paper that burns through to the picture.

Site patterns

The caption rule runs on the bench’s clock and shows in the loupe; the burn keeps real time. Point at a plate with a mouse; on touch it rests on its print, as on the site.

States

Rest the blue-noise print, made at the plate’s displayed size, straight on the paper
Hover the print burns through to the crisp poster from the pointer, shadows first, then the video plays; the title turns --state and the caption rule develops from the pointer
Leave the print burns back over the live frame from scattered seeds, and the video pauses once it settles
Keyboard focus the burn opens from the centre and the rule develops from the caption’s middle
Touch nothing burns: a tap is the link, and the plate rests on its print

Anatomy

Print 16:9, no panel, padding or frame
Caption one --border hairline 12px under the print: the title in the clean cut at 18/24, client and year as labels at the right
Rows two modules apart, since with no panel the gap is what separates them
Burn in about 520ms from the pointer, plus Bayer grain at each dot’s landing
Burn back about 640ms
Rule fires a 280ms flare under the pointer and develops both ways in 140ms
Phones a carousel of pre-rendered 3:4 prints instead (MobileProjectCarousel)

Rule timings are read from rule.ts at build time; burn timings from the style guide.

Decisions

  • Plates, not cards

The print sits straight on the paper with no panel, padding or frame (Oct 2026).

  • The caption joined the hover

The title turned red but the picture stayed still, so the plate read as two targets. Now entering on the caption opens the burn from the print’s bottom edge.

  • No arrival

Plates rest on the print from the first paint; the page transition is the arrival, so a picture playing its own on top of it was a second one.

  • Printed at the size shown

The resting print is made at runtime at the plate’s CSS size, because a resampled PNG clumps an even stipple into a grainy shimmer.

  • No numbers

The plates’ 01–04 went in Oct 2026: order shows by position.
